Winston Churchill, painter

In the latest Christie’s London auction, Winston Churchill’s painting “The Tower of the Kutubia Mosque” has been sold for 7 million pounds (8.2 with commission).

The painting has an interesting history. Churchill, who was an amateur painter, painted this work in Marrakesh in January 1943, where he went after the Casablanca conference with Franklin D. Roosevelt. He gave the painting to Roosevelt as a gift. In fact, it was the only painting Churchill painted during the Second World War.

The painting belonged to Roosevelt’s son, who eventually sold it. After passing through several hands, it was finally bought by Brad Pitt as a gift to Angelina Jolie. It is the latter who has sold it through Christie’s.

We suppose that it is because of this famous provenance that the painting has fetched such a high price.
